It’s always a dream to every home theater owner to have a disc player that could handle every type of format. It’s a huge technical challenge to any manufacturer to produce one but Oppo Digital managed to produce such a universal player with its new Oppo BDP-83. Such a versatile disc player does exist even before Oppo BDP-83 was produced but the Denon DVD-A1UDCI costs almost 10 times of what Oppo BDP-83 offers, making Oppo BDP-83 the most anticipated device among home theater enthusiasts.
Blu ray BDP-83 – Front
Not only the price is much cheaper to its competitor; it has been known for a long time that Oppo Digital brings only top notch audio and video quality. The combination of quality superiority and its affordability has just set a new benchmark for Blu Ray player market.
Design
Its generic look is a good thing as the standard size allows it to stack perfectly with other devices. Oppo BDP-83 keeps the balance by having the disc tray at the middle section with intuitive close/open button sitting on the right side of the tray. The conventional yet durable look of disc player is due to the classy brush metal exterior.
The back panel features 5.1 or 7.1 gold plated connections, component video, composite video, stereo analog audio, a HDMI 1.3 compliant connection, coaxial inputs, an Ethernet port, a USB 2.0 connection and IR ports which can be easily setup.
Features
There are a lot of features equipped into the OPPO BDP-83 which bring the best to us. The latest video and audio codecs available in Blu-ray allows it to deliver the utmost performance and in order to ensure the device is always updated with the latest codec, BD-Live connected via the Ethernet port will continuously checking for updates. This device is also equipped with enormous 1 GB memory storage, ready to take newly downloaded content.
As a true universal player in every sense of the word, BDP-83 outdoes the competitors by offering support for almost all known formats (i.e. Blu-ray Disc, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, AVCHD, Kodak Picture CD , SACD and CD).

Performance
Anchor Bay Technologies ABT 2010 processor handles video processing on the HDMI side and it features proprietary VRS 10-bit video scaling, proprietary lip synch technology and mosquito noise reduction. Oppo claims that it delivers a picture that is free of artifacts, cleaner, true-to-life and smoother.
The blacks were excellent and gave the image depth and dimension with no noticeable loss of details. Colors are accurate and natural and free from banding problems. Coupled with gorgeous deep blacks images were presented with a three dimensional quality.
On movies with fine details and complex scenes like the excellent remastered ‘The Fifth Element’ Blu-ray disc, there were absolutely no moiré or jaggie effects on any of the scenes. Colors were vibrant and black levels were rendered correctly.
Bottom Line
It may look like an innocent classic device on the outside, but it has a lot to offer. Ton of features combined with excellent performance and an easy user interface at $499 – obviously not the cheapest Blu-ray player but even at that price it represents an overall value that is very difficult to match. But for enthusiasts who have been anxiously awaiting for the Oppo BDP-83’s more unique features, it probably is the biggest bargain in today’s home theater marketplace.
